August Edition

August ANC Meeting

Though the beach is calling, ANC 2B is hard at work. Join us and our special guest Council Member at Large Christina Henderson this Wednesday August 10 at 7pm for our monthly meeting. It’s virtual, and the agenda and link to join our meeting is here: August ANC 2B Agenda. Beach attire optional.

New Chair
This is my first meeting as Chair of the ANC; Matthew Holden has moved out of ANC 2B . Of note, because there is insufficient time to conduct a special election, his seat in ANC 2B09 will remain vacant through the remainder of the term. I will work with fellow officers and committee chairs to support ANC 2B09 constituents; please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Special Guest: A Conversation with CM at Large Henderson
Council Member at Large Christina Henderson joins us this month, and we’ve asked her to provide an update on two pending bills to address pedestrian safety, as well as a preview of the Council’s fall agenda. This topic is particularly timely; four people were killed on DC streets in July. Thirty four ANC Commissioners joined me on a letter to the DC Council to urge prompt passage of Walk Without Worry and Safe Routes to School bills, to prioritize safety interventions.

Agenda Highlights
This month’s agenda includes both routine ABRA reviews and several new public space applications. We will also consider a community request that DDOT conduct a study and provide options for upgrading the Q and R Street NW roadway including bike lanes to current safety standards.

Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian safety has been a priority of ANC 2B throughout this term; we’ve issued 14 resolutions to improve safety during this term. Last September, Nathan Ballard Means was struck at the intersection of New Hampshire and S NW. Fortunately, he was not seriously hurt, but this intersection, along with other intersections, were identified as dangerous in a 2020 Study of Safe Routes to School authored by Ross Elementary parents.

As the Washington Post reported last week, drivers don’t slow down in school zones. Theresa Vargas, a Post columnist, detailed the consequences for children in our city, in her column: multiple deaths and too many close calls. She quoted our ANC letter , which noted, “We are often the first asked by grieving relatives to explain how these tragedies could have occurred, and what we are doing to make sure these tragedies aren’t repeated. These painful conversations and memorials are no substitute for effective policy responses. We are committed to ensuring that every DC citizen, from school student to senior, can cross our streets without fearing for their lives and safety. We urge the Council to fast track two of several innovative bills pending, to signal that DC is making pedestrian safety an urgent priority. We can and must do better - our constituents deserve safe streets.”

Our ANC 2B looks forward to working with Council Member Pinto and colleagues to pass this important legislation and to promote wider safety awareness; stay tuned.
